Periodista inglés, director influyente de The Times, de Londres. Mientras se desempeñaba como funcionario público en Sudáfrica, fue nombrado director del Johannesburg Star como parte de un esfuerzo para fomentar el apoyo de las políticas oficiales. Fue director de The Times durante los períodos 1912–19 y 1923–41, época en que se relacionó con un grupo de personalidades que buscaba delinear las políticas públicas inglesas mediante el diálogo personal con estadistas de renombre. Dawson se consideraba el "secretario general del orden establecido. Fue una persona fervientemente convencida del entendimiento pacífico, y su labor fue clave en la táctica que desembocó en el acuerdo de Munich de 1938.
